Dr. Watson, thanks for sharing these insights, so needful today. And thanks for referring to Augustine's "The City of God", as it seems particularly applicable to our Western and American church culture today. A compromised church especially needs to re-learn how to distinguish between the City of God and the City of Man, and to do so will require sound 'judgment' of our culture, of our church, and of ourselves.
Dr Watson, this particular post seems to be quiet timely in light of what seems to be unfolding at the current UMC general convention. The lunge towards far-Left political positions, along with their unwillingness to allow congregations who disagree with this now official UMC stance on current social justice issues will cause further conflict within the Wesleyan tribes. As orthodox believers advocate on the need to amicably release those churches who feel the need to disaffiliate from the New UMC, the charge of being judgemental is bound to come up.
There’s a whole lot of light shining out of these words, Dr. Watson. I pray that it continues to penetrate the darkness of my hard old heart and made up mind. What translation of Augustine are you using? It’s wonderfully clear and accessible.
Solid and comprehensive, in that order. Thanks. PS. Creates hunger to read more of Augustine for oneself.

What would an amicable release look like? Don’t we already have numinous disaffections .
